A few years ago, I took at look at the way my colleagues were practicing divorce law, and I was disturbed. I saw “pit bull” lawyering, traumatized children, dissatisfied clients, and judges overwhelmed with petty disputes that were really just people using the courts to vent years of bitterness. The only people who were happy were the pit bulls.

Since I started L4J, collaborative divorce has grown across the nation from a small, fringe concept in the legal profession to a preferred method of divorce. And L4J has grown with it.

In 2006, I became aware of a woman who made false allegations of violence against her husband, just to get him thrown out of the house so that she could be with her boyfriend. This woman spent six months pretending to be a victim, deceiving me, deceiving the court, and using the children’s affection to get more alimony and child support.

That case was a turning point for me. I did some research, and found that men often get the short end of the stick when it comes to seeing their kids. I also discovered how common it is for women to use false allegations of abuse just to get more money out of their husbands; or as payback. And worst of all, women sometimes disparage the father to the children, and cause them to close their hearts to their dads. And I remembered that many, similar things happened to my own father, and to me, when my parents got divorced.
